Our dear Baltic Sea, it lives yet? The sea is the world's most polluted seas. If we stop all emissions today, it would take 25 years before the water would be completely clean. The situation in the Baltic Sea in recent years has deteriorated drastically. Scientists are sounding the alarm and say we have to bet big. It has been launched some projects, but yet it is much left to do. The salmon are almost extinct, and large parts of the seabed is already dead.
2. THIS we wanted to study these issues we have been thinking about for a long time, and now we finally get the chance to answer these questions: • How bad feeling Ösetersjön and its inhabitants? • Why has it become so? • Will it ever be restored?
3. HOW WE DID After much searching for phone numbers, many forward linkages and referrals to other so we had to finally hold of some experts on the issue. Including an expert from the Water Council (an organization that wants to improve the Baltic Sea environment) by the name of Erik Lindblom.
4. THIS WAS THE RESULT Baltic Sea is knocked down and out for the count. The situation is catastrophic, as the lake keeps its inhabitants dying out. How is it really that it has come to this? For about 100 years ago, it was like any other healthy sea anytime. But now the 385 000 square kilometers heavily polluted. The main threats are pollution of various kinds. Farms emit large amounts of nitrogen fertilizer. This causes overproduction of algae with oxygen depletion and fish kills as a result. Treatment plants also present major problems. In a sewage treatment plant in Estonia as purified only two per cent, the rest were released into the sea. What we individuals can do is basically nothing when compared with what companies can do. We can reduce our emissions from the boats, which is a major environmental impact, and use environmentally friendly antifouling. Another major threat to poor Baltic is that many ships flush their oil tanks at sea instead to clean them inside a port. The Coast Guard is trying to do everything to stop them, but like everywhere else in society, they have too little resources. If they still get hold of the culprits, they have good lawyers to help them. But if they would still be folded so they get mild punishment to be discouraged. A pretty lame arguments they use are sometimes "we ran into oil, it was here when we arrived." But when the Coast Guard call their boats and they will find no trace of oil. Those who receive the misery is seabirds and plankton. After a major release die many birds and several million plankton. It is easiest to find oil when there is good weather, it has environmental boats with efficient equipment. Discovering oil in time is obviously an advantage .. Some other animals also feel sorry for the fish. The salmon most affected. It has happened to poison the M74 and overfishing. The poison causes that 75-80% of the larvae die. Anglers who is a great association tries to reduce emissions in both the sea and in the air. They are also trying to influence the government to get into a reduction of overfishing. In some rivers, there are only so few wild salmon that you can count them on the left hand. Anglers are also trying to save Gold Footbridge salmon in Vänern that are in the same situation as the sea salmon. But there is hope for the future. Some projects have helped the Baltic Sea. Among other things, a water treatment plant built in the city Korgessaare in Hiiumaa in Estland.Tack to Swedish industry, the Swedish aid activities and the Stockholm Water Action has this plant could be built. We often invest only in our own facilities but if you measure avstådet between Stockholm is twice as far to Gothenburg to Hiiumaa. In Korgessaare live 700 people but they emit as much pollution in the sea as a city of 14,000 residents due to a large fish cannery. Until today, the water has been almost completely untreated. Becomes 2% to 98%. A Russian treatment system that consisted of pits in the ground have previously "worked" as a wastewater treatment plant, but the purification effect has been only 2 percent. Today provides purification 98 percent output. The treatment plant purifies first mechanically and then biologically. The waste water is circulating and oxygenated in the same way as in an aquarium. This allows to avoid cod and bottoms die.
5. DISCUSSION How is it that the Baltic Sea has become the world's most polluted seas, and yet we boast to the world that we have the world's cleanest capital. That's not up for Stockholm is located on the Baltic Sea. I (Martin) sail much every summer and see how the development goes. Before, there were lots of bladderwrack at the beaches. Now it's just mass "gegg" (see example). If you dive down a few meters then the bottom quite dead. Why always the environment affected? Think about all the toxins would be released into Rosenbad, there would be chaos. I think that the Swedish company would sponsor the projects in the East. It would be good PR for them. Now we handle ourselves pretty well but the major threats in the Baltic States and Poland. We must help them not only with money but also with well trained people. Anglers say we have to stop overfishing, but what fishermen do? Should they stop fishing or? They will also need to live. Imagine if you were to say to SAS: Now you may stop flying to the environment is not feeling well. Would it work? But if you think further ahead then overfishing will lead to that we will not have any wild fish left in the sea. We will then only have farmed fish remains. How will this end?
