Lab Report lågreaktioner of some ionic compounds

Topic: Chemistry
| More

We have studied lågreaktioner of some ionic compounds, and this is what we came up with.

Method:

We poured a few drops of hydrochloric acid in a watch glass, then we took another watch glass and poured in following salts

Sodium chloride
Strontium chloride
Copper chloride
Potassium chloride
Lithium carbonate
Barium chloride

Then we took a piece of platinum wire, we first dipped in hydrochloric acid and then in one of the salt crystals.
On platinum wire are now both hydrochloric acid and crystal, since we implemented the wire into a burner and thus we achieved a chemical reaction.

Materials

This we used to conduct this experiment.
2st watchglass
1 Forceps
little platinum wire (a few centimeters)
Burners
small test tube with hydrochloric acid
and a minor amount of salt crystals following:
Sodium chloride
Strontium chloride
Copper chloride
Potassium chloride
Lithium carbonate
Barium chloride

Results

Depending on the kind of crystal we had on platinum wire, burning flame in different colors.
Below is a list showing which color each subject achieved
Sodium Bright Red
Strontium Red
Copper chloride Turquoise
Potassium chloride, Periwinkle
Lithium carbonate reddish yellow
Barium yellow green, however, most yellow

Conclusion

Depending on the electronic structure of a metal ion is, it absorbs light of a specific color, and thus determines the flame color. Since different ions have different electronic structures, each ion gives rise to a specific color.
